Sojourn Is An Evangelical Church

Published November 5, 2025

When we say that Sojourn is an Evangelical church, we mean something deeply rooted in Scripture and the history of the Christian faith. The word evangelical comes from the Greek word euangelion, which simply means “good news.” It’s the same word the Bible uses for the gospel—the good news of what God has done to save sinners through Jesus Christ.

To be an evangelical church, then, is to be a church that is centered on proclaiming the good news of Christ—the gospel. At Sojourn, we believe the gospel is both the foundation and the fuel of the Christian life. It’s not just the way we begin our journey with Christ; it’s the truth that transforms every part of life—our worship, our relationships, our work, our priorities, and our mission in the world.

We desire to be a church deeply shaped by the gospel in three specific ways:

1. Gospel-Centered Worship

Our worship focuses on Jesus—not on entertainment, self-improvement, or moralism. Each week, we gather to be built up in the truth that God is for us, not because of our performance, but because we are forgiven and accepted through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

2. Gospel-Shaped Community

The gospel creates a community unlike anything else in the world. It breaks down the many walls that divide people into tribes—politics, race, economic status, and more. The church is a place to be known, loved, and to belong—a place where people know your name, and where it’s okay to not be okay.

3. Gospel-Fueled Outreach

The gospel is such good news—so important and so life-changing—that it cannot be contained within the walls of our homes or churches. As those who have received the amazing grace of God, we long to live lives that are both salt and light to those around us. Following Jesus, we seek to live out the call:  “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone…”  — Galatians 6:10

In short, when we say that Sojourn is an Evangelical church, we mean that we are a people who believe, proclaim, and seek to be shaped by the truth of the Gospel, the good  news of Jesus.
